4 of you and not one of you brings up that he stepped up and did a great job when Ryan McDonagh and Dan Boyle were out for a month earlier in the year?
Every single partner Staal has ends up playing the best hockey of their career, Anton Stralman went from a guy who was kicked out of the Devils camp to supposedly being better than Staal once paired with him. Kevin Klein went from a no name defenseman to having a career year this year paired much of the time with Staal this year.
It's all a coincidence I know |

the free market decided that andrew macdonald is worth 5 million a year for 6 years, so the short answer to the question: yes. |

I think that due to Staal's injury issues, his advanced analytics are skewed. He's playing some pretty good hockey right now and last year in the playoffs especially. He's a good defenseman that is capable of logging 25+ minutes a night against the best forwards in the world on a nightly basis. He has some off nights but most of them time, and especially in the playoffs when every game is huge, he's a great shutdown defenseman. He probably has the best poke check in the entire NHL.
Why does this deal keep being compared to Brooks Orpik when it could be compared to Paul Martin's deal?
As for the 2nd pairing defenseman stuff, the only reason he's on the 2nd pairing is because of McDonagh. Realistically, he plays just as many minutes as McDonagh and plays against the Crosby's and the Ovechkin's and the Perry's just as much as an top pairing defenseman in the league. His "2nd pairing" label is only due to what the lineup looks like on paper, but he's a bonafide top pairing caliber defenseman. |

Marc Staal had a goal last night along with his "all time low" Corsi For relative. - tomburton99
It's funny how people forget how Staal literally manhandled Crosby in disappearing in the playoffs last year. But nah, he's not good at shutting down top offensive players |

To be fair, I think Stralman has proven that he's definitely in the conversation to being on par with Staal. He's a great defensive defenseman as well. - rangerdanger94
Tis fair. I like Stralman and wished he stayed here. But to be honest, nobody wanted the guy a few years ago and pairing him with Staal under Torts made him what he is today. |

If as everyone says that Staal would easily get 6mm per on the open market (which is true), then why exactly is this a bad deal for the Rangers ?
He's a legit top 4 defenseman, and 5.7mm is the market. Good deal for all.

stralman was overrated when he was on the rangers. then he signed with the lightning and now he's a top shut down guy in the league. |

I think Torts definitely helped him develop into a great shutdown defenseman. Prior to that, he was more of an offensive guy. Now, he virtually lacks any offense at all outside a simple breakout pass.
A big issue with Stralman was he had some bad medical issues before he came to NY and had access to our medical resources.

This is true. We were laughed at when we actually called him underrated. |

Brooks Orpik got the same type of deal on the open market and he's 5 and half years older than Staal.

Thats like saying Ray Rice is OK because he isn't OJ. At the end of the day, he's still terrible. |

No.
I don't think it's a good deal because I don't think Marc Staal brings enough to the table to get that kind of money. This deal looks good if it's next to Brooks Orpik's, but that's about it.
I think Glen Sather essentially paid market price for his own defender, which is a tick in the loss column for the GM. Anton Stralman is a better defender than Marc Staal and Sather let him away to Tampa last year at over a million dollars less per season. |
